Saint Catherine Medical Center Fountain Springs is pleased to announce that the Radiology Department recently received a perfect score on their Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) inspection. This is the second year in a row that the department has achieved a 100 percent rating.
The MQSA requires all mammography facilities across the nation meet uniform quality standards. The MQSA, passed by Congress in 1992, ensures that all women have access to quality mammography for the detection of breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. Under this law, all mammography facilities must by accredited by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), be certified by the FDA as meeting their standards and undergo an annual MQSA inspection.
The standards that must be met during an MQSA inspection include the testing of the mammography equipment, maximum allowable radiation dose, quality assurance, medical audit and outcome analysis, medical recordkeeping and reporting requirements, and documentation that verifies that all physicians who interpret the mammograms and the technologists who perform the mammograms have had adequate training and experience. Technologists are required to perform 240 mammograms every 24 months and radiologists must interpret 800 mammograms annually. Saint Catherine Medical Center Fountain Springs has two Certified Mammography Technologists who have received additional specialized training in precise imaging and compression techniques, to make the testing as comfortable as possible for patients.
